TJ & Todd is more of an online record for me and other single or widowed dads with that may stumble upon it.
TJ and I lost his mom in August of 2011 and since then, with the help of family and friends, have struggled to find our version of normal life together. While I know a couple of single moms with disabled kids who are in a similar position, I have yet to meet any dads. Im hoping that my blog will reach out to some of the guys with disabled kids on the interwebs, maybe give a few of you hope that if I can do this (because I consider myself neither smart nor resourceful), you can too!
I hope you enjoy reading about some of our adventures and misadventures. While Im told that I am doing fine and am a great dad, I have a lot to learn, TJ has taught me so much in the time that it has been just he and I. Being a 7 year old with Cerebral Palsy and developmentally delayed, I know he understands when I tell him that it is going to be just he and I moving forward and that Mommy isnt going to be here, I guess I am just surprised at how well he has adapted to her not being here. While I have not adapted so well, TJ is the thing that holds me together a lot of times, when I would like to just throw in the towel, and many people might, spending time playing with him and making him laugh makes me happier than anything else I could imagine.
TJ has progressed rapidly since his mom passed away, I have had him to Neurologists, Therapists, Pulmonologists...etc etc etc. That god for the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and UCP! While non verbal, he can communicate by nodding his head, his has particular words he will use for yes and no. I know he didnt choose to be born with CP, and while it is the norm for him, I am still adjusting to the looks he gets, the fits he throws when someone coughs (on the flip side, he can sit directly in front of a marching band and loves it...so weird), but I am getting to understand his quirks and he is getting to know mine.
So....I hope you find some entertainment here, it's sort of therapy for me, and maybe I can remember half of the things his drs. tell me if I write them down in the blog somewhere......
